In the old days, surf flicks were about surfing. Sure, Bruce Brown’s, “The Endless Summer,” turned the camera on some local people or animals or landscapes…but it was mainly about a couple of SoCal dudes looking for epic surf. Patagonia changed outdoor sports film-making by using the action as a vehicle for environmental and conservation awareness. Sure, Surfer X scored some meaty barrels in Location X, but did you know that Big Bad Businessmen are trying to build dams and Walmarts at Location X that will destroy the ecosystem forever?
Enter Double Barrel, an award-winning film directed by Angie Davis and co-produced by Dustin Hollick that chronicles their journey to Lobitos, a small town in Northern Peru threatened by encroaching Big Oil Industries. Teaming up with Peruvian surf guide, Harold Koechlin, they catch some lefts that will make you drool, but they also highlight the unsustainable footprint Big Oil will make on the coastline of Northern Peru if allowed to carry on with their greedy, profit-blinded plans for “progress.”
The ugly off-shore oil platforms are only the beginning. Oil companies, if left unchecked, will dominate the pristine coastline of Northern Peru with refineries, smokestacks, pipelines, and supertankers. Of course, Big Oil promises jobs and “progress” for the sleepy communities, but at what cost?
Angie Davis says, “Our goal with the film was to raise awareness on the issues of sustainable development and surf tourism and help this enchanting village, Lobitos, become the protected Oasis it deserves to be.” In response to similar campaigns, the Peruvian government has already designated areas of Chicama, La Herradura, and Cabo Blanco as federally-protected marine preserves. This project is the first step in applying for a World Surfing Preserve in Peru’s northern coastal region. Not only will this save the waves, but it will help communities explore and adopt more sustainable economies based around surf tourism.
Lobitos is still in the fundraising phase of this process, and all proceeds from Double Barrel will go to the Lobitos campaign. Kicking off our “Pay if Forward Campaign,” EDGEtv is stoked to donate a portion of ad revenue to Lobitos: Juntos Por Las Playas Del Norte. You can stream Double Barrel on EDGEtv’s Roku and/or AmazonFire channels. Enjoy the film and know that, in doing so, you’ve contributed to keeping the country country!
