Mary Osborne Surfs China’s Silver Dragon

Not many people outside the surfing universe know that, every autumn, the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, China produces 10-foot tidal bore waves and that a select group of professional surfers have the guts to ride them.

EDGEtv Influencer, Mary Osborne, has been making the pilgrimage to surf “The Silver Dragon” for many years.  This August she joined surf legends Koby Abberton, Cheyne Magnusson, Jamie O’Brien, Dean Morrison, and Robert “Wingnut” Weaver as part of the 2016 Red Bull Qiantang Shootout.

“The wave size wasn’t too scary for me,” said Mary.  “But the gnarly part was dodging all the obstacles, like boats, jet skis, and underwater jetties!”

The tidal bore is one of the largest in the world and is created by a phenomenon wherein the unique topography of the river’s bed and banks interacts with the gravitational pull of the Harvest Moon.  Sounds like mythology but, then again, Mary is a mythic surfer!
