First Steps: Mary Osborne

When Mary Osborne’s brother, Dave, pushed her into her first real wave (which she rode for 10 seconds), she immediately ran up the beach to her mom and said, “Did you see that?

Her mom said, “I thought that was a boy surfing, not you.”

Mary recalls, “I’ll never forget that wave. I stood in shock and rode it all the way to shore.”

You could say that Mary is still riding that wave, honing her craft to make her not only one of the best surfers on the planet, but also one of surfing’s most accomplished ambassadors. Her list of achievements is long, and growing: Star of MTV’s Surfer Girls, Patagonia Ambassador, United Nations Environmental Safe Ambassador…

But she’s never forgotten her first steps, that stoked smile she has now brought to over 1000 kids at her surf camps and escapes.

One more Mary Memory: (discussing the above photo) “My first photo shoot… It was freezing but I wore a bikini because I thought it made me look cuter.. I was 13 ;)”
